Jamie Lennon has praised the rapid progress of teenage midfielder Ryan Sheridan at St Patrick's Athletic. The 17-year-old has made five substitute appearances in the Premier Division this season and is seen as a key figure for the future.
Lennon, the Saints manager, said that Sheridan has impressed with his attitude and ability to learn quickly. "He’s been training with us most of the season," Lennon said. "He’s had to wait patiently for his chance."
Stepping up in Leavy's absence
Sheridan's emergence has been timely given the absence of Kian Leavy, a key player for the club this season who is out with a foot injury. Lennon acknowledged the youngster has helped fill the void. "He’s added some good energy that we’ve needed," the manager said. "Obviously, we’ve been missing Kian Leavy, who’s been a big part of our success this season. It’s hard to replace that."
The versatile midfielder, who can play in attacking or deeper roles, has already gained significant cup experience. He played 46 minutes in the FAI Cup victory against Shamrock Rovers last month and completed the full 120 minutes in the subsequent penalty shootout defeat to Bohemians. In that dramatic shootout, Sheridan successfully converted his spot-kick.
A strong league position
Sheridan's development comes as St Patrick's Athletic sit second in the Premier Division table with 53 points from 30 games. They are just three points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers, a gap they recently closed with a 2-0 home win over the same opponents on 11 September. Jason McClelland and Aidan Keena scored the goals in that key victory.
That result ended a run of six matches without a win in all competitions for the Saints, which included a 2-0 home defeat to Waterford. With seven games left, the team is in a strong position to improve on last season's fifth-place finish.
Looking ahead to Dundalk

Lennon emphasised that Sheridan's willingness to listen has been central to his progress. "The young lad listens to the players around him, listens to the information he’s given," he said. "And he learns from that. Sometimes, young lads, it can take them a couple of times to make mistakes before they learn the lesson." With key players like Leavy sidelined, Sheridan's continued growth could be vital for Pat's in the final stretch of the season.
