Adam Murphy, 21, has completed his second EFL loan move after signing with Fleetwood Town on a six-month deal from Bristol City. The Republic of Ireland youth international called the decision a 'no-brainer' following discussions with manager Matt Lawlor, who outlined his playing role. Murphy, who previously spent part of last season on loan at Swindon Town, expressed excitement about the move, stating: 'It was a no-brainer for me.'
Murphy's career began at St Patrick's Athletic, where he progressed through the academy and made his senior debut at 16. The Dublin-born midfielder captained the club's Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League and earned his first professional contract at 16. He became St Pat's youngest starter in modern times when he faced Dundalk on his 17th birthday. After recovering from a serious hamstring injury, Murphy helped the club win the FAI Cup in 2023 before joining Bristol City in January 2024.
The midfielder's first EFL experience came during his brief loan at Swindon Town, though an ankle injury cut his time at the County Ground short. Murphy praised the experience, calling it 'a great taste of league football' and noting the positive impact of working under former Swindon manager Ian Holloway. 'He’s a legend of the game and I really enjoyed working under him,' Murphy said. 'He taught us a lot about how to conduct ourselves in life.'
Murphy highlighted Fleetwood's understanding of Irish football and Lawlor's familiarity with his playing style as key factors in the decision. 'The fact the gaffer has managed over there means he knows the league and has seen me play a lot,' he explained. 'That gives us a really good foundation for our relationship.' The midfielder aims to contribute both offensively and defensively, stating: 'I want to contribute goals, assists and everything else required from a good midfield player.'
