Patrick Vieira takes the helm of Senegal

Patrick Vieira, 50, has been named the new head coach of the Senegal national team, replacing Pape Thiaw who was dismissed following Senegal’s 2026 World Cup exit. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced the appointment on Monday, citing the move as a “strategic” step to build a high-level technical staff in line with the country’s sporting ambitions.

A return to his roots

Born in Dakar, Senegal, Vieira moved to France at the age of eight and later represented France 107 times, winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. His playing career is most closely associated with Arsenal, where he captained the “Invincibles” and won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups. He also played for Juventus, Inter Milan, Manchester City, and had a spell in the United States with New York City FC.

Coaching résumé

Vieira’s coaching journey began with NYCFC in 2016 before he took charge of Ligue 1 side Nice (2018-2020). He became Crystal Palace’s manager in 2021, but was sacked in March 2023 after a 12-match winless run. He then had short stints at Strasbourg and Genoa. At Genoa, he guided the club to safety in the 2024-25 season with eight wins and nine draws from 26 games, but left the club by mutual consent in November 2024 after a poor start to the 2025-26 campaign.

The task ahead

Senegal’s appointment comes after a bruising 3-2 loss to Belgium in the last-32 of the World Cup, following defeats to France and Norway in the group stage. Vieira’s immediate goal is to rebuild momentum for one of Africa’s leading national teams and prepare Senegal for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The FSF said details of his official presentation and the length of his contract will be announced later.

A controversial predecessor

Thiaw’s tenure ended after Senegal’s World Cup exit and a controversy in January when he led the team off the field during the 2025 AFCON final against Morocco, a decision that led to the Lions being stripped of the title. The FSF’s decision to replace Thiaw reflects a desire to move past that period and focus on future success.

Looking forward

With Vieira’s appointment, Senegal now has a former world-champion midfielder who knows both French and Senegalese football cultures. His first matches in charge will likely come in the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers, where he will aim to restore the Lions of Teranga to their former continental stature.
