Melia has already played almost 100 senior matches for St Patrick's Athl. before moving to North London, and his exposure to competitive football should be important if he arrives at Sincil Bank.
What Type Of Forward Is He?
Melia is primarily a centre-forward and has spent much of his career operating as the sole striker. However, describing him as a traditional number nine does not quite capture the variety within his game. He is comfortable dropping away from the defensive line to receive possession, turning with the ball and carrying it towards goal. He also has the speed to threaten space behind defenders, while his technical ability allows him to operate from either flank when required.
What Could He Bring to Lincoln City?
Melia's versatility could make him useful within City's attacking structure. He could lead the line, play from the side or potentially operate close to another striker. In our 4-2-3-1, he could play on either side of the three. If we go 3-4-3, the same applies. Or, if we need him to, he can be the one up top. We've even toyed with 3-5-2 in the summer, not a formation I like, but he could operate as one of the two.

Quick breaks will be something we rely on, and his movement will be crucial. Remember Rob Street at Cardiff? Quick movement, clever positioning and the right runs will be a big weapon for us. I'm told during his early months at Tottenham he was noted as looking more dangerous when dropping into deeper positions than when playing as an old-fashioned target man. His touches, turns and anticipation stood out, even during a match in which he became isolated for long periods. That feels important when considering how City might use him. Melia is not necessarily a replacement for a powerful focal point who will dominate centre-backs in the air. He looks more like an explosive and technically gifted attacker who can move across the front line, attack gaps and create chances through his own movement.
Speed And Ball Carrying
One of Melia's most attractive qualities is his ability to travel quickly with the ball. He does not simply possess pace over distance. He wants to receive possession, turn towards goal and commit defenders. During his time in Ireland, he averaged 1.58 progressive runs per 90 minutes and ranked particularly highly for accelerations when compared with other centre-forwards playing at a similar level. There are examples of him collecting the ball inside his own half before carrying it to the edge of the opposition penalty area. That directness would give City a new dimension in attack.
